One of DC's signature characters, The Joker has been an integral part of  two Batman movies, interpreted by Jack Nicholson in 1989’s "Batman" and Heath Ledger in 2008’s "The Dark Knight."
The latest actor to breathe life into the character was Jared Leto, who played the villain in the 2016 movie, "Suicide Squad."
While Leto will reprise his role in the upcoming "Suicide Squad" sequel, he won't play the lead in the untitled new spinoff movie.
Set in the early 80s Gotham City, the spinoff will be a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film.
Todd Phillips will direct the film and Martin Scorsese will produce alongside Phillips.
The Joker origin movie will be the first film under an untitled banner which will expand the canon of DC Comics properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the characters.
A lead is yet to be cast for the spinoff movie.
